Stub it Out! Smoking Cessation – can you help!

ONI have been approached by a final year Optometry student at Ulster University to ask for your help with her final year undergraduate project which is researching the role of Optometrists in providing smoking cessation services.

A recent report describes a statistically significant link between smoking and eye disease, in particular age-related macular degeneration and nuclear cataract.  However, the general public are largely unaware of the link between eye disease and smoking. There is strong evidence to suggest that health care professionals have an important role to play in smoking cessation support.  Optometrists are well placed to provide information and advice to patients regarding the risk factors associated with the risk of developing ARMD and nuclear cataract.  There is a dearth of evidence regarding the role that UK Optometrists currently play with respect to smoking cessation support and advice.

This project requires participants who are currently practising as GOC registered Optometrists in Northern Ireland.

The research is  carried out using a short questionnaire which takes no more than 5 minutes to complete. The link for the survey is attached at the bottom of this email.

Thank you for your help.
