Professor Augusto Azuara Blanco to address ONI AGM – Wednesday 29 May at 7.30pm Stormont Hotel

ONI are delighted to announce that prior to our AGM, Professor Augusto Azuara-Blanco will speak for 20 minutes on an exciting  project which has started in Northern Ireland.

Professor Azuara Blanco says

“As you are probably aware, in several countries in East Asia, Australia and India, low dose atropine is becoming the standard method of controlling myopic progression in children. In the UK, low dose atropine is not licensed for myopia control as there have been no studies testing its efficacy in children living in UK – yet!

A large multicentre trial funded by NIHR (the research organisation of the NHS) has just started in Belfast, Glasgow, Birmingham, Cambridge and London.    In this trial we will evaluate the efficacy of low-dose atropine (0.01%) eye drops versus placebo.   Details of this trial and the potential role of NI optometrists will be discussed.”

This will be followed by the Annual General Meeting.  This is an important meeting as we hope to approve the amended Constitution and will be electing new members to ONI Committee.  We do hope that you can join us and look forward to seeing you there.
