Why have an HSC Email Address?

Data-BreachesA letter went out to 265 contractors on 30 October asking if they would be interested in having an HSC Email address.  Optometrists are the first group of allied health professionals to be given this option, so it was a big surprise that everyone did not initially jump at the chance. So far over half have confirmed that they want this facility, with a few declining the offer.  The remainder have not responded.

The initial deadline of 13th November has been and gone, but the good news is that the deadline has been extended to 1 December.  So, if you had meant to reply but not just got around to it – now is your chance! Click on the link below to view the letter.

Some practices are currently emailing BSO and HSCB queries including patient details (names, addresses, dates of birth etc).  We have been asked to highlight that this (and fax) are NOT a secure link and could be viewed as breach of data protection and patient confidentiality.  As the profession moves towards electronic referral and other LES schemes, we must be careful to avoid playing fast and loose with patients details.  An HSC email address is the ONLY option for secure transfer of patient details. Absence of a secure connection will prohibit certain practitioners from participating in LES which require transfer of patient data.
